In this essay, I will attempt to explore the various arguments for and against self-awareness in AI, and draw a conclusion as to its importance. Self-awareness, according to the dictionary, is “the knowledge that one exists as an individual separate from others”. In the context of AI, it would thus refer to a machine’s ability to understand that it is a machine, and not a human. This might seem like a pointless distinction to make, but it is actually crucial. If a machine is self-aware, then it can, in theory, understand its own limitations. It can understand that it is not omniscient or omnipotent, and that it is subject to the same laws of physics as everything else in the universe. This understanding would, in turn, allow the machine to better solve problems, since it would know not to expect results that are outside the realm of possibility. Some argue that self-awareness is a necessary prerequisite for true AI. Without it, they say, a machine can never really understand the world around it, and will always be at the mercy of its programming. This is a strong argument, but it is not without its flaws. First of all, it is not clear that self-awareness is actually possible. There is no guarantee that a machine will ever be able to understand its own nature in the way that humans do. Secondly, even if self-awareness is possible, it is not clear that it is necessary. There are many examples of machines which are extremely intelligent without being self-aware. The most famous example is Deep Blue, the computer that beat Garry Kasparov at chess. Deep Blue did not need to be self-aware to beat Kasparov; all it needed was a better understanding of the game of chess. In conclusion, the importance of self-awareness in AI is still an open question. There are strong arguments for and against its inclusion in artificial intelligence. Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to include self-awareness in AI will come down to a question of practicality: if self-awareness is necessary for AI to reach its full potential, then we should strive to create self-aware machines.
